Yamaha TT 600 59X – Air-Cooled Keeping Off-Road Legend Alive

It sits between the puristic XT 500 and the water-cooled WR generation Yamaha TT 600 59X (model years 1983 - 1989) as the epitome of air-cooled single-cylinder enduros: 595 cm³, four-valve SOHC, 43 mm telescopic fork, 300 mm rally brake disc - all packed into a 125 kilogram dry weight. Ex works without lights, indicators or electric starter, the TT 600 was designed for rally raids and enduro terrain; At the same time, with its small headlight kit, it was suitable as a street-legal “hard enduro” for ambitious weekend pilots. Four decades later, the punch of the air-cooled single-cylinder still impresses, but only regular maintenance and high quality Yamaha TT 600 59X spare parts protect the kick-start myth from oil shortage plagiarism, valve seat fretting or float chamber thirst. In the following guide we provide a good 2,000 words of concentrated practical knowledge: components, intervals, weak points, sensible upgrades - all tested several times in our Motorize workshop, where over 30 59X engines have been overhauled since 2008.

1 | Origin & type codes

The TT family started in 1981 with the 34K series (562 cc). It was published in 1983 TT 600 59X as a European large series and US export (Type 36A). It adopted the pistons and connecting rods from the Dakar-tested XT 550, but received a 97 mm piston with a reduced stroke (84 mm) - a total of 595 cm³. Identifying features:

Plastic tank 11 l, side aluminum scoops, one-piece rally seat.

Lightweight rims DID 1.60 × 21 / 2.15 × 18, rear drum Ø 140 mm.

Kickstart + manual DeKo lever, four-speed transmission until '85, five-speed from '86.

43mm KYB fork, monocross lever with KYB shock absorber 300mm travel.

The 59X was phased out in 1989; The successor TT 600 S/SC (3SW) received an electric starter, double tube frame and heavier crank. The TT 600 R DJ01 (1998) and TT 600 R 4GV (2003) with a DOHC five-valve head followed later - many components (clutch, cam chains, piston ring sets) are still backwards compatible, which makes the supply of spare parts easier.

2 | Engine & Intake – Simplex chain drive, twin carb power

The core of the 59X heart is the air-cooled one Aluminum cylinder with Nicasil coating. It houses a 4-valve SOHC layout, driven by a 219 DID timing chain via primary gear. The mixture preparation is carried out by a dual carburetor system: Mikuni VM34SS primary with vacuum slide and an intake manifold secondary carburettor Ø 30 mm, which switches on at 1/2 → full throttle. The following spare parts are essential for a long life cycle:

Nicasil cylinder liner
Athena 1W2-11311-A0, plateau-honed, 97 mm.

Piston ring set Ø 97 mm
OEM 59X-11603-00 or Wössner 8264D.

Timing chain
DID 219-FHV 108 links + rivet lock.

Rubber intake manifold
59X-13586-00 / -13596-00, ethanol-resistant.

Setup tip: Standard nozzle 135 HD / 40 LD, needle 4J13-3, secondary nozzle 90. Open SR Racing damper requires 140 HD, secondary 95. Oil: 10W-50 Ester (2.3 l incl. filter) every 2,500 km; Valve clearance: intake 0.08 mm, exhaust 0.12 mm every 5,000 km. Check rocker arm for pitting at > 40,000 km; Replacement lever 3YF-12171-00 (nitriding steel) extends service life.

3 | Electrics & ignition – CDI kick without battery

The 59X works battery-free: 6-pole alternator delivers 35 W light circuit + 55 W ignition. CDI box 34K-85540-10 has fixed advance (14° → 34°). The weakest point is the pickup wiring harness, whose PVC becomes brittle after 30 years. Modernization:

New stator 100 W
Electrex World G70 – +65W light reserve.

DC-CDI Ignitech
12 V conversion + LiFe battery, map switchable Rally/Street.

H4 LED headlight 20W
3,000 lm, ABE, –0.5 kg.

Iridium DR8EIX
15% easier cold start, more consistent spark energy.

4 | Chassis & brakes – rally suspension travel without rocking orgy

43mm KYB fork (compression at the bottom, rebound at the top) delivers 300mm of travel; Oil quantity 590 ml (SAE 5 W). The monocross rear uses a KYB shock absorber with 5-fold preload, no rebound. Brakes: 300mm NG-Wave disc + Nissin 1 piston (front), drum rear. The following are recommended for current off-road requirements:

Fork oil seals 43 × 55 × 11 – NOK ARI 067.

RaceTech GoldValve FMGV-S43 – cartridge conversion.

Wilbers Zero Friction Springs – 0.46 → 0.63 kg/mm.

YSS MZ456-TRL shock absorber – tension + preload hydraulic.

Speigler steel braided cable – stable pressure point.

5 | Maintenance schedule & wear and tear

Service point interval Parts/Fluid
Engine oil + filter 2,500 km / 12 months Motul 7100 10W-50, filter HF145
Valve clearance 5,000 km Shims Ø 26 mm, set of hotcams
Timing chain 10,000 km DID 219-FHV 108L
Clean air filter 500 km off-road Twin Air 26-8006 + No-Toil oil
Grease steering head bearings 10,000 km All-Balls 22-1006, fat NLGI-2
swingarm bearing 15,000 km Needle bearing HK 2212, sealing caps

6 | Typical weak points & solutions

Kickstarter setback
Replace freewheel spring 59X-15517-00, “undercut” gear edges.

Cracks in the head disk around the candle
Heat shortening - plan head, cylinder screws 43 Nm, copper gasket.

Nicasil detachment
Overheating - Oil Cooler Kit + 10W-50, Re-Plating at Langcourt EU.

Drum brake fading
EBC GX-Series pads, drum turning 150.00 +0/-0.05 mm.

7 | Useful upgrades – more control with the same character

  • Keihin FCR-41 – +5 HP, spontaneous throttle, easy start.
  • Oil cooler kit Setrab 7 rows – 12 °C less oil temp.
  • Rally tank Acerbis 20 l – +180 km range.
  • Hub milling + Excel rims – 1.2 kg less rotating mass.
  • LED lighting + DC conversion – 65 W reserve for navigation & heated grips.

8 | Parts supply & scene

Yamaha still lists pistons, timing chains, seal sets and clutch as normal. Used market: tt-club.de, HorizonsUnlimited and eBay classifieds; There you will find NOS frames, GST plastics and rare 11 liter aluminum tanks. 3D print file shares provide speedometer holder repros, fork protector clips and float chamber breathers. Stainless steel exhaust (SR Racing) saves 1.6 kg, E-mark included.

9 | Conclusion – driving 59X means: a kick, a grin
